The Super Bowl LIV halftime show in Miami's Hard Rock Stadium saw pop megastar Jennifer Lopez, 50, swinging and hanging from a supersized stripper pole, a compilation of crotch-grabbing, and singer Shakira co-headlining.
To be clear, everyone expects the halftime show to be a little risqué. The costumes are going to be suggestive and then there's always that chance of another ‘wardrobe malfunction.’ More so, with headliners Jennifer Lopez and Shakira, you could even say that it wouldn't have been complete without at least some bootie-shaking for the camera. No one's trying to be a prude.
But the rest of it — you know, the leg-spreading, crotch-grabbing, stripper-pole-swinging softcore porn part — was all of that really necessary? The NFL knows most people are watching this as a family or are at parties with kids of all ages glued to TV sets. Wouldn't it have made sense to warn people that this year's show was going to be R-rated and maybe let them decide beforehand whether or not to show it at their family-friendly gatherings? I guess the FCC is just cool with whatever these days?
Sadly, the whole world was watching and the assumption has to be that they were left thinking, rightly or not, this halftime show represents what America's all about. But that's not the worst part. Not even close.
The worst part is that every kid that watched that performance walked away with some hypersexualized impression of what it means to be a strong woman. Empowerment comes from a stripper pole. And that is an epic tragedy.
