ON OFFENSE: Donald Trump accuses Robert Mueller of lying to Congress

An angry President Donald Trump publicly accused Special Counsel Robert Mueller on Wednesday of lying to Congress. “Even Bob Mueller lied to Congress!” Trump wrote on Twitter, thanking Attorney General Bill Barr for stepping in to reduce the recommended sentence for political operative Roger Stone.

“Congratulations to Attorney General Bill Barr for taking charge of a case that was totally out of control and perhaps should not have even been brought,” Trump tweeted. “Evidence now clearly shows that the Mueller Scam was improperly brought & tainted.”

Yesterday, President Trump expressed outrage after a federal prosecutor recommended Roger Stone serve up to nine years in prison — a harsher sentence than what had been originally briefed to the DOJ.

“This is a horrible and very unfair situation,” Trump wrote. “The real crimes were on the other side, as nothing happens to them. Cannot allow this miscarriage of justice!”

Trump made another direct connection between the harsh sentencing and the Mueller probe Tuesday night, saying Stone was "caught up in an investigation that was illegal, the Mueller Scam."

In the immediate aftermath of the Fox News breaking story yesterday, CBS News' Catherine Herridge tweeted that, according to a Senior DOJ official, the department was shocked by the recommendation and that “this is not what was briefed to [the DOJ]. The [Department] believes recommendation is extreme, excessive, grossly disproportionate to offenses.”
