Democrats block Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act in the Senate

Forty-one Democratic senators voted this afternoon to block the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act, successfully filibustering the legislation and preventing it from receiving a final vote. The bill would have required doctors to provide standard medical care to newborn infants who survive abortion procedures.

Delivering remarks on the floor of the Senate, founder of the Senate’s first pro-life caucus, Senator Steve Daines (R., Mt.), led a group of Republicans in an impassioned speech in support of the bill prior to the impending vote.

“The next bill we will be voting on tomorrow is the Born-Alive Abortion Survivors Protection Act,” Daines said, “which mandates that if a baby is born alive following a botched abortion, the doctor must protect that baby and give the same medical care that any other baby would receive. Is that too much to ask for?”

Senator Lindsey Graham spoke on the Senate floor ahead of vote on Pain-Capable Unborn Child Protection Act.

Speaking on the ability of an unborn child at 20-weeks to feel pain during surgery, Graham said, “The bottom line is, I find it odd that medical science requires anesthesia to save the baby's life, but during that same period, you can dismember the child. That's what we're talking about here."
