Thousands of French security forces fanned out across central Paris on Saturday as anti-government “Yellow Vest” protesters defied a ban on mass gatherings aimed at preventing the spread of coronavirus.

Voters were set to go to the polls Sunday for municipal elections in an important test for Macron and his party. Voters will choose 35,000 mayors and almost a half-million town councilors in elections that will go forward despite the coronavirus outbreak — a threat which led Macron to order the closure of schools, universities and all major sporting events.
“We had to come and mark the day to tell Macron that we’re still here and that we won’t accept his pension reform,” one pensioner told a Reuters reporter.
