Pompeo: U.S. calls on China to permanently close wildlife wet markets

U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo said that the United States has called on China to permanently close its wildlife wet markets, citing links between those markets and zoonotic diseases.

“Given the strong link between illegal wildlife sold in wet markets and zoonotic diseases, the United States has called on the People’s Republic of China to permanently close its wildlife wet markets and all markets that sell illegal wildlife,” Pompeo said in a statement Wednesday.

In light of the COVID-19 pandemic, here are some behind-the-scenes footage from Racing Extinction, filmed while documenting the wildlife markets in Guangzhou, China. These markets are breeding grounds for pandemics. Keeping exotic wildlife and farmed animals, in small cramped cages with unsanitary conditions creates a perfect storm for zoonotic viruses. Please help spread the word about wildlife trade and the dangers it poses to both humans and animals.
