Alexei Navalny: UK 'deeply concerned' after suspected poisoning leaves Putin critic fighting for his life

Russia's most prominent opposition leader is in a coma after suspected poisoning left him "screaming in pain" on a flight to Moscow. Alexei Navalny, 44, a long-time critic of Russian President Vladimir Putin, is unconscious in intensive care in a hospital in the city of Omsk, according to his spokeswoman Kira Yarmysh.

Mr Navalny was placed on a ventilator and is "in a coma in grave condition," Ms Yarmysh said on Twitter.

Marina Litvinenko told The Associated Press from Sicily, Italy, that it was “obvious” that Navalny would not stop trying to expose corruption or oppose the Kremlin despite numerous stays in prison or periods of house arrest.

“It was obvious he would not be stopped,” she said. “Maybe they decided to do a new tactic not to stop him just with an arrest but to stop him with poison. It looks like a new tactic against Navalny.”
